SEO for Journalists 2

The New York Times  are also talking about SEO for journalists. I see the point about the challenge to the craft of Journalism, but isn't this just about developing that craft in a way that works for online users?

I'm sure for most journalists the reward is having their work read. If that means considering SEO, then surely adapting their craft for more online eyeballs makes sense?

SEO for Journalists

Jeff Jarvis is right on the money with his post on SEO as the new newsstand.

I'm currently working on an internal project with Jim Muttram  to embed SEO at the heart of editorial practice. This requires a huge cultural shift and is bound to meet objection from the 'Old Guard', but RBI journalists have to recognise and embrace new distribution channels such as search, blogs and RSS.

At the end of the day, its not just about SEO, but journalists understanding how to write well for the user.

Blogging 4 Business -We Media

Due to the heavy charges for wireless access at the Marriott Hotel, I decided to post my Blogging 4 Business highlights after the event.

The final session entitled 'Blogs and the Media' featured a great panel and some interesting insight from Peter Bale - Online Editorial Director at the Times Online. Peter's thoughts on managing brand risk and consideration of regulatory issues are also highly relevant issues for my employer, Reed Business Information.

The potential cost implication of moderating  blogs was also something that I hadn't really considered fully, so this is another area that requires considersation as I develop a proposal for a Reed Business corporate blogging platform.

Guillaume Champeau, Project Manager for  AgoraVox, offered some insightful comment on the future role of citzen media, and how he sees traditional and citizen media as complementary.

I'm really impressed with the AgraVox model and paticularly the way in which advertising revenue will be split with the contributing author. It set me thinking about the idea of developing citizen media within a B2B model, getting industry experts to publish blogs alongside our editorial teams in specific vertical markets.

The idea of an Airbus engineer blogging for Flight Global alongside our regular journalists, could add real value for our users and build an online aerospace engineering community.

Could be an interesting pilot project, so watch this space!

Corporate Frustration

Following a lengthy meeting discussing the adoption of a corporate blogging strategy that effectively went nowhere, my growing frustration has finally inspired me to start blogging.

Don't get me wrong, I understand all the issues with corporate culture and leadership, but when you can see other corporates embracing social media, as a leading B2B publisher, RBI should be ahead of the game.

I'm hoping this blog will help to share ideas and frustrations with others who are in a similar position within large corporates. Maybe I should start by breaking senior management in gently. Dan Gillmor sums it up nicely on the BBC.
